FEMSA had to deal with the Covid-19 crisis in 2020 when it recorded losses of US$700 million (with revenues of almost US$25 billion), and had clashes with the Mexican government over tax issues and even energy policies. Despite this, José Antonio Fernández Carbajal, president of the company, outlined initiatives that kept the conglomerate as one of the largest employers in the region, with more than 320,000 workers. In addition to realigning its business strategy, Fernandez announced that FEMSA would open its businesses, such as the Oxxo chain of stores, to people seeking political refuge.
