Jorge Mandilego is the executive director of Cuba Emprende, a project that seeks to contribute to the progress of the non-state sector in Cuba through business training and advisory services. Under Mandilego’s leadership, more than 3,600 entrepreneurs have been trained. Since 1968, Fidel Castro’s government has prevented the development of small businesses, but the government of Cuba’s former president Raúl Castro showed an openness to privately-run businesses that Mandilego capitalized on, as he believes that entrepreneurship improves the quality of life of the island’s inhabitants.
