She has been the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) since July 2008. She defines herself as a woman committed to equality, especially when it comes to gender issues. She previously served as assistant secretary-general for management at UN Headquarters in New York and served as chief of staff and deputy chief of staff to Kofi Annan, then secretary-general of the United Nations. She was invited by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to join his government team as ambassador to the UN, but declined the invitation.
