Mariela Espino is managing director of Banco República, an institution that handles almost half of the deposits in Uruguay. She was the second woman to be appointed to this position in the 125-year-old company. An accountant by career, she joined the state-owned institution 42 years ago through a competitive examination. At the bank, she was risks manager and during the 2002 crisis, she was in charge of supervising the loans collection area. She was also the manager of the commercial network. From her position, she has driven a process of digital transformation, which remains a mainstay of her work to this day.
