He is one of the icons of the financial sector, he is the son and successor of Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo, the richest man in Colombia. Sarmiento Gutiérrez has been in charge of the group since 2000. Now Aval has a presence in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras through BAC Credomatic and Multi Financial Group in Panama. In Colombia it operates four banks (Bogotá, Occidente, Popular and AV Villas), a pension fund (Porvenir) and it has a presence in the investment banking business through Corficolombiana. As of 2020, it closed with assets of COP 322.89 trillion.
