Mario Leão became CEO of Santander Brazil in January 2022. In that period, the 48-year-old faced a worsening credit quality that affected the banking sector with an increase in defaults and debt renegotiations by companies such as retailer Americanas. The CEO tightened lending criteria and, in the first half of 2023, began to show signs of improvement in the loan portfolio, with a plan to make headway among high-income customers.
