Ricardo Salinas Pliego is one of the three richest men in Mexico with a fortune of US$15 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. Son of businessman Hugo Salinas Price, his conglomerate Grupo Salinas is involved in telecommunications, banking, financial services and energy businesses. The public accountant and graduate of the Tecnológico de Monterrey has been involved in recent controversies, such as his criticism of the new public education textbooks, which he described as “communist”, while one of his main companies, the television station TV Azteca, faces a dispute with creditors for US$400 million of defaulted bonds.
