Hispanic Women in US Earn 86.1% of Hispanic Men’s Pay in 3Q2022

Bloomberg — Hispanic women in the US earned 86.1% of what their male counterparts were paid in the third quarter, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

The gender pay gap, according to the report, varied widely by race and ethnicity. Black women earned 90% of Black men’s pay, White women earned 83.1% as much as White men, and Asian women earned 71.1% as much as Asian men. This means the pay gap between Hispanic women and men is closest than in any other community in the US.

In general, the report said, US women earned 83.4 cents for every dollar men made in the third quarter, up a cent from the prior period but marking a pay gap below the high of 84.3 cents reached last year.

The median weekly earnings of full-time male workers was $1,164 compared to $971 for female employees, or a women’s-to-men’s earnings ratio of 83.4%, according to a US Bureau of Labor Statistics report Tuesday.

The report also showed that wages aren’t keeping pace with inflation. Median weekly earnings of the nation’s 120.2 million full-time wage and salary workers were $1,070, not seasonally adjusted, in the third quarter. This was 6.9% higher than a year earlier, compared with a gain of 8.3% in the Consumer Price Index over the same period.

Disparities persist. Wages for Black, Asian and Hispanic men have kept up with inflation, while those for White men and women, Black women and Asian women have failed to do so over the past year. Inflation-adjusted wages for Hispanic women were flat since the third quarter last quarter.

Other findings in the report:

• Among the major race and ethnicity groups, median weekly earnings of Blacks ($881) and Hispanics ($861) working full-time jobs were lower than those of Whites ($1,101) and Asians ($1,442)
• Median weekly earnings for Black men were $922, or 77.3% of the median for White men ($1,192)
• Median earnings for Hispanic men were $908, or 76.2% of the median for White men
• Black women’s median earnings were $830, or 83.8% of those for White women ($990)
• Earnings for Hispanic women were $782, or 79.0% of those for White women.
